Dental Checkups in Columbia, TN
All of us here at Beck Dental Care agree with the recommendation of the American Dental Association—you should see your dentist at least twice each year for a dental checkup. And we’re not saying that just because we’re dentists. Time and time again we’ve all seen patients who come for their regularly scheduled checkups and are able to avoid a painful problem or more invasive treatment simply because they scheduled and kept their six-month dental checkup. Let’s take a look at what a typical checkup involves.
What to Expect at Your Next Dental Checkup?
You may have noticed that the first thing we do at your checkup is take your blood pressure. Because you come to us every six months for a checkup and you may not see your general physician as often, these appointments provide the opportunity to more frequently check these important health numbers. Moreover, a patient with high blood pressure may have serious consequences as a result of certain dental procedures. Obviously, Dr. Beck and Dr. Hart will want this information, along with the rest of your medical history, in order to ensure your health and safety.
Examining Teeth, Gum Tissue, & Oral Cavity
Next, both your Columbia, TN, dentist and one of our dental hygienists will carefully examine your teeth, your gum tissue and your entire oral cavity. We’re looking for changes in your oral health (and these are easier to spot if we see you regularly) as well as signs of trouble, such as a cavity, periodontal disease or a suspicious sore that may be an early sign of oral cancer.
Measuring Gum Pocket Depth
To assess your gum health, the hygienist may use a probe to measure the depth of your gum pockets. Healthy gum pockets measure three millimeters or less. At this depth, you can do a good job of keeping your gums healthy with regular brushing and flossing. Pockets that are deeper may accumulate food debris and bacteria that can eventually lead to gum disease. In this case, periodontal therapy in our office or with a trusted periodontist may be necessary.
We’ll also take routine digital x-rays at some of your checkups. These allow us to see problems that we may not be able to find during a visual examination. For example, an x-ray shows tooth decay happening below the enamel surface of a tooth, decay that is hiding between teeth, or an infection inside a tooth or below the gum line.
Of course, each dental checkup includes a thorough teeth cleaning. Our hygienists use high-speed instruments to clean and polish your teeth. We also floss your teeth to remove any food particles that may be trapped there as well as any plaque buildup—the precursor to gum disease.
Finally, your checkup offers us the chance to show you how to brush and floss more effectively. And, these appointments are your chance to let us know about any problems or changes in your oral health that you’ve noticed.
