Wisdom tooth removal is a common procedure for teenagers and young adults, but that doesn’t mean the recovery period is always easy. As a parent, you may be wondering what you can do to keep your teen comfortable and help them heal properly.
With a little preparation and plenty of patience, you can make those first few days after wisdom tooth extraction much more manageable.
Help Them Take It Easy
Your teen may be eager to return to school, sports, or their normal routine, but rest is an important part of recovery. Encourage them to take it easy immediately after the procedure and follow their dentist’s recommendations about when they can resume normal activities.
Strenuous exercise can increase blood flow and potentially contribute to bleeding, so your teen should avoid running, heavy lifting, sports, and other vigorous activities until their dental professional says it’s safe.
This can be particularly important for active teens who are accustomed to being on the move. A few quiet days now can help support a smoother recovery.
Follow Medication Instructions
Your teen may experience some discomfort, swelling, or soreness after their wisdom teeth are removed. Their dental professional may recommend or prescribe medication to help manage these symptoms.
Make sure your teen follows the instructions they were given, including how much medication to take and when to take it. If you’re unsure about combining medications or have questions about side effects, contact the dental office or another healthcare professional before making changes.
Keeping track of medication during the first couple of days can also be helpful, particularly if your teen is tired or uncomfortable.
Choose Soft, Easy-to-Eat Foods
Your teen’s mouth may be tender after surgery, making crunchy or chewy foods uncomfortable. Stock the kitchen with soft foods that require little chewing, such as yogurt, applesauce, smoothies, mashed potatoes, eggs, and soup that has been allowed to cool.
Avoid extremely hot foods and beverages immediately after surgery, as well as hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could irritate the extraction sites.
If your teen drinks a smoothie, remember to skip the straw. The suction created by using a straw can interfere with the blood clot that forms in the extraction site.
Keep the Mouth Clean
Good oral hygiene remains important during recovery, but your teen will need to be gentle around the extraction sites. Follow the specific cleaning instructions provided by their dental professional.
They may be instructed to gently rinse with salt water after the first day, but vigorous swishing or spitting should be avoided unless specifically recommended. Your teen should also avoid poking or touching the extraction sites with their fingers or tongue.
Watch for Warning Signs
Some swelling, soreness, and minor bleeding can be expected after wisdom tooth removal. However, certain symptoms may indicate a complication.
Contact your teen’s dental professional if they experience severe or worsening pain, significant bleeding that doesn’t improve, increasing swelling, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or other symptoms that concern you.
Following the post-operative instructions you receive is one of the best ways to know what’s normal for your teen’s particular procedure.
Give Them Time to Recover
Every teen’s recovery is a little different. Your teen may feel much better after a few days, while their mouth may take longer to fully heal. Encourage them to follow their dental professional’s instructions even if they’re feeling ready to jump back into their usual activities.
With plenty of rest, appropriate foods, careful oral hygiene, and attentive monitoring, you can help your teen navigate the recovery period with fewer surprises.
A little extra care now can help your teen get back to doing what they love as comfortably and safely as possible.
