However, it’s normal to have concerns about the cost of dental sedation because insurance companies often view it as a luxury. While this is true in cases of elective procedures, it can be covered by your dental insurance when deemed medically necessary by your dentist. Here’s what you need to know to keep sedation dentistry affordable.

Types of Dental Sedation

You have many options available when it comes to dental sedation. Your dentist will determine which type best meets your needs, like:

  • Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide is an inhaled sedative that’s better known as “laughing gas.” It does not render you unconscious, but you’ll reach deep relaxation to the point you may doze off. It’s the safest and most affordable type of sedation.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation: Oral conscious sedation is stronger than nitrous oxide. It’s a prescribed medication taken before your procedure. You will be drowsy and may have fragmented memories of your procedure.
  • IV Sedation: IV sedation is reserved for complex cases, like oral surgery. You’ll sleep through your procedure and will have no memory of your treatment.

Dental Insurance May Cover Sedation Dentistry

Dental insurance will not cover sedation dentistry when used for cosmetic services, like porcelain veneers or dental implants. Your coverage may pay some of the expenses if your dentist determines it’s necessary for your care, like extracting a tooth or performing a root canal.

Options to Keep Dental Sedation Affordable

Your dentist will work on your behalf with your dental insurance to maximize any applicable coverage. After reaching your annual deductible, your benefits may pay some of the expenses until hitting your yearly limit.

Besides using your dental insurance, there are other options to keep sedation dentistry affordable, like third-party financing. You can pay any out-of-pocket expenses using monthly installments. Based on your credit approval, you can enjoy little or no interest in financing to keep your care comfortable and affordable.

Your dentist will always keep your comfort as their top priority. They’ll create the personalized treatment plan you need to invest in optimal oral health through pain-free dental care.
