A healthy, luminous smile is something everyone wishes they had. Sometimes, it can seem nearly impossible to achieve. So, why not make a point of taking better care of your teeth over the next 365 days by making New Year’s resolutions revolving around your oral health? Read on for five ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will help you achieve the healthy smile you’ve always wanted!

#1: Visit the Dentist

How often do you visit the dentist? If it’s been six months or longer since you last attended a dentist’s appointment, now’s the time to make one! Rather than waiting until oral health issues arise, visit your dentist two times per year. This will allow them to do a thorough exam to determine if you have any problems that need treating. Additionally, your hygienist will do a deep clean of your teeth to remove buildups of tartar and lessen your chances of developing cavities.

#2: Brush and Floss Better

Did you know that skipping the dental floss leaves 40% of plaque on your teeth and sharply raises your chances of developing cavities between your pearly whites? That’s why flossing at least once per day, preferably before you go to bed, is such an important part of a good oral hygiene routine. Additionally, brush your teeth once in the morning and once at night for two minutes. These two things combined will help you keep oral health issues at bay.

#3: Conquer Dry Mouth

Is your mouth regularly dry? If so, make sure to drink plenty of water. Dry mouth can lead to a range of oral health issues, including cavities, mouth sores, and gum disease. You may also want to visit your dentist so they can determine if the dryness is being caused by an underlying health issue and administer treatment if necessary.

#4: Cut Out Tobacco

It’s a well-known fact that smoking and the use of other tobacco products is bad news for your oral and overall health. In the new year, make a point of cutting the bad habit out of your life. Reach out to family and friends for support, and ask your dentist, doctor, or therapist for resources that will make it easier to quit.

#5: Brighten Your Smile

Unfortunately, fan-favorite beverages like coffee, cola, tea, and wine can leave unsightly stains on your teeth. Brighten up your pearly whites by cutting back on these drinks or cutting them out of your diet altogether. Additionally, ask your dentist what options they have available to remove stains or cover up discoloration

Why not spend the next 365 days improving your oral health? With these five tips and a talented dental team, the smile of your dreams will soon be a reality!
