How to Start Your New Year with a Healthier Smile

2020 is winding down, and the time has come to start planning for the new year. Many New Year’s resolution lists will likely include “more self-care” and healthier food choices, but why not add improving your dental health to your list? In addition to visiting your dentist in Columbia, here is a list of 5 ways you can start improving your oral health so you can start the new year with a luminous smile.

Regular Brushing and Flossing

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day for 2 minutes and floss daily. But statistics show that the average American only brushes their teeth for total of 45 to 70 seconds a day and only 30 percent of Americans floss daily! Brushing removes plaque and food particles from the surfaces of your teeth while flossing clears the spaces between your teeth and below your gumline. Making sure that you floss and brush for the recommended amount of time is a great way to kick off your journey to a brighter smile.

A Better Diet

If a healthier lifestyle is one of your goals for the new year, it will benefit more than just your body. The frequent consumption of soda, candy and other junk food can lead to a buildup of plaque and cavity-causing bacteria. If sweets are your guilty pleasure, try chewing on xylitol-sweetened gum. This sugar-free and aspartame-free can help reduce your risk of tooth decay and satisfy your sweet tooth with its range of flavors that include fresh fruit and even chocolate!

Stop Using Tobacco Products

Smokers are at a higher risk of gum disease and tooth loss. Why? Because the chemicals found in cigarettes, smokeless vapes and other nicotine products restrict the flow of blood and nutrients to gum tissue. It also reduces the mouth’s ability to replenish connective tissues and fight bacteria and infection. Deciding to quit using tobacco products is an excellent choice for both your mouth and your overall health. If you need help figuring out which method is best for you, your healthcare physician can help.

A beautiful, healthy smile can open a lot of doors for you in 2021. Keeping these recommendations in mind when the new year arrives will definitely assist you in your journey to a happier, healthier you.
