Missing A Tooth? Your Dentist Says
You're Not Alone

Hello everyone! We hope that you're settling well into spring so far. For our first newsletter, we think it’s important to highlight a phenomenon that many people may not be aware of. This is regarding an issue that plagues many Americans, especially those who are older. We’re talking about the issue of missing teeth.

Did you know that half of Americans are missing at least one tooth, according to the American College of Prosthodontists? That equates to about 178 million people! Furthermore, at least 40 million Americans are missing all their teeth. We honestly can’t decide which fact is more startling.

We mention these points to help you and your family understand that missing teeth is not an abnormal condition. In fact, it becomes increasingly common the more you age; 30 percent of Americans aged 65-74 have no natural teeth left.

Without functioning teeth, the most basic self-care becomes increasingly difficult. That’s why we wanted to take the opportunity to discuss the benefits dental implants can provide you and your family members who suffer from tooth loss. No patient should have to deal with this issue on their own.

Dental Implants and Oral Health

The impact dental implants offer is multi-pronged. When the mouth is missing teeth, your remaining teeth can start drifting towards the open spaces left by those missing teeth to compensate. Shifting teeth can cause radical changes in your bite, and an unhealthy bite will make basic tasks like chewing more difficult. It can also cause an uneven distribution of force as your chew, leading to teeth grinding and tooth enamel wearing down more quickly.

What many people don’t realize is teeth don’t just consist of a visible crown. They also have a root which holds many oral functions. For example, tooth roots allow blood to flow effectively to the gums and face and prevent bone loss in the jaw from occurring. Once teeth are gone, the bone will begin to travel to other areas of the body where it’s needed, causing the jaw to become weakened over time.

Remember, dental implants are the only treatment capable of restoring these dental functions.

Improving Your Body's Health Via Dental Implants

When you’re missing teeth, it can become significantly more difficult to eat a balanced meal. Being restricted to a softer diet means you’ll need to work harder to create a varied diet of proteins, dark leafy greens, and crunchy fruits. If you’re struggling with malnutrition because of your limited ability to consume these foods, dental implants can provide a renewed path.

Additionally, patients who are missing teeth are more likely to experience overeruption, a process where teeth in the upper jaw protrude into the missing space. This increases the chances of tooth decay and inflammation (which ties to gum disease.)

Since the dental disease has been linked to more serious illnesses time and time again, it becomes more and more prudent to replace missing teeth, and dental implants are a great solution.

Take Back the Look & Function
of Your Smile

If you’re trying to regain the aesthetics and the daily functions your previous smile provided, dental implants do it incredibly well at a great value. Our implant dentist uses porcelain restorations that mimic teeth naturally, so people won’t be able to tell the difference between your implants and existing teeth. If you’ve ever felt self-conscious about your smile before, dental implants can give you the confidence boost you’ve been looking for.

Furthermore, implants are designed to integrate with your existing bone, so you can feel confident when eating your favorite foods. This balance, along with the longevity dental implants provide, is exactly why so many people are choosing dental implants to transform their smile.

However, Dr. Williams works specifically on dental implants, so he is the best dentist to speak to on the subject. For those who haven’t met Dr. Williams, we’d like to take a moment to introduce him better today.
