Do you avoid making dental appointments because you’re afraid of emotional or physical discomfort? If so, you’re not alone. Whether it be due to anxiety, a medical condition, or negative past experiences, many Americans hate going to the dentist.
Fortunately, more and more practices offer dental sedation, which could very well help you get the care you need without all the stress. Keep reading to learn more about the three main types and which one could be right for you.
Disclaimer
Before diving into this topic, it’s important to know that dental sedation doesn’t technically “knock you out.” No matter which of the three main types you pick, you’ll be conscious for the duration of your treatment. However, patients often feel so relaxed that they doze off naturally and usually have only foggy memories of their appointment. More often than not, dental sedation is effective at helping nervous patients have a more positive experience.
The Types of Dental Sedation
Generally speaking, nitrous oxide (a.k.a. “laughing gas”) is the mildest form of dental sedation commonly available. Since it’s a gas, you’ll inhale it through a low-profile nasal mask. Nitrous oxide is suitable for the vast majority of patients and works best when symptoms of anxiety or discomfort are also mild.
Oral conscious sedation is usually swallowed in pill form, though a liquid version can be given to children. It produces a stronger sense of relaxation than nitrous oxide and is best for those with mild to moderate symptoms.
IV sedation is administered intravenously, like a shot. It’s considered the strongest sedative of the three main types and is typically only recommended when nitrous oxide or oral conscious aren’t able to provide the patient with relief.
Talk to Your Dentist
Considering the severity of your needs can certainly help you determine which dental sedation method is right for you, but at the end of the day, you’ll want to talk to your dentist. Some medical conditions (like upper respiratory issues) and medications interact negatively with certain forms of sedation, so it’s important for a professional to review your health history.
Be honest with your dentist when requesting dental sedation, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions. Your comfort is a priority, and they’ll be happy to help you figure out which form of sedation is best for you!
