3 Easy Ways to Give Your Teeth a Spring Cleaning

A new season has begun, so it’s the perfect time to make a fresh start with a spring cleaning. While you’re sorting through your closets and scrubbing the countertops, you may want to consider treating your teeth to a spring cleaning as well. After all, your home isn’t the only thing that deserves to feel nice and fresh! Now is a great time to take stock of your dental care routine and figure out what you can change to make your smile as clean and healthy as can be. Read on as a dentist in Columbia gives three simple tips!

1. Upgrade Your Toothbrush

With the change of the seasons comes a natural opportunity to switch out your toothbrush for a brand-new one. According to the American Dental Association, you should replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed or worn. When the bristles are damaged, they won’t be as effective at cleaning your teeth.

Don’t just replace your toothbrush with the exact same version; consider upgrading! For instance, firm or medium bristles might seem like they clean more thoroughly, but they may actually harm your teeth by damaging your enamel. Choose a brush with softer bristles instead to protect your pearly whites.

2. Clean Your Toothbrush Holder

Let’s face it – out of all the things in the bathroom that need to be cleaned, your toothbrush holder is probably pretty far down on the list. However, keep in mind that it’s exposed to all of the same germs as the other surfaces in your bathroom. Before you place your new toothbrush in the holder, make sure to clean the holder by scrubbing it with soap in warm water, wiping it with disinfectant, or running it through a dishwasher. Repeat this step at least once or twice a week to keep your toothbrush – and your teeth – clean.

3. Schedule a Professional Teeth Cleaning

As important as your at-home oral hygiene routine is, there are certain areas of your mouth that your toothbrush and floss simply can’t reach. That’s where your dentist’s team can help. Most people need to attend a professional teeth cleaning in Columbia at least twice a year. These visits give the hygienist a chance to remove plaque and tartar that you can’t on your own. Your dentist can also spot potential problems and treat them early on, as well as give you tips on caring for your smile at home. Has it been more than six months since your last dental visit? If the answer is “yes,” then pick up the phone and set up your next one!

Start the new season off on the right foot by giving your smile the care it deserves. With these tips and your dentist’s advice, your teeth can feel nice and fresh for the rest of spring and beyond!
