Why it Might Be Time to Replace Your Metal Dental Crown

If you have an older dental crown, you may have gotten used to it, but you don’t have to live with a smile that doesn’t look or feel the way you want it to! These days, more and more patients are opting for non-metal crowns, as they’re more natural-looking and better for your health. Plus, replacing your metal crown with a modern option can make quite a big difference in both your confidence and comfort. Here’s what you need to know.

Metal Crowns Are on Their Way Out

Metal crowns were once the standard choice for restoring damaged teeth. While they are durable, they do come with a few downsides. For example, metal crowns stand out when you smile, laugh, or talk, especially if they’re on your front teeth, due to the silver-colored materials they’re made from.

Metal can also expand and contract with temperature changes, which may increase tooth sensitivity. Also, over time, metal-based crowns can sometimes cause a dark line to appear along the gumline due to the bonding materials becoming visible. There’s also simply the possibility that a patient may experience an allergic reaction to a metal crown.

The Advantages of Non-Metal Dental Crowns

Many modern dental crowns are made from non-metal materials, including porcelain, ceramic, or zirconia. They can be carefully color-matched to your existing teeth, meaning that they’ll blend in seamlessly. And since they’re fully customizable, they’ll also be the correct size and shape, which means they don’t just look normal—they function just as well, too.

Plus, these materials are all biocompatible, meaning they’re perfectly safe to be placed inside the mouth and do not leave dark lines around the gumline. They’re also gentle on these surrounding tissues and resistant to temperature sensitivity.

If your current crown is still functional, you may wonder if it’s worth replacing it at all. Many patients decide to upgrade for cosmetic reasons alone, but if your crowd is beginning to show signs of wear, causing you sensitivity, or making you self-conscious in any way, it’s the perfect time to switch to a non-metal option!
