If You Haven’t Been to The Dentist Recently, Here’s What You Can Expect

For one reason or another, it’s been more than a minute since the last time you’ve visited a dentist. It’s been so long, in fact, that you’re not quite sure what to expect. Feeling unprepared isn’t ideal – especially if you’re already nervous. But don’t worry; your dentist will help make sure you’re comfortable throughout your entire appointment. In the meantime, keep reading so you can get an idea of what your checkup and cleaning will look like.

The Checkup

The first part of a checkup and cleaning is, well, the checkup. You’ll likely fill out some paperwork about your health history while you’re in the waiting room, and after your dentist shows you to the patient’s chair, they’ll confirm these details with you and might ask some follow-up questions.

Your dentist will probably also want to take oral X-rays, but you won’t have to do this every time you visit. They will then visually examine your mouth, screening for issues like cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. Before you know it, they’ll be wrapping up your checkup by reviewing their findings and giving you a chance to ask questions.

The Cleaning

Once all of your questions are addressed, your dentist will step out so a dental hygienist can start the cleaning portion of your appointment. Using special tools, they’ll remove plaque and tartar that can’t be eliminated with your toothbrush at home, then floss between your teeth and polish off your pearly whites. If your hygienist asks you to rinse your mouth a couple of times, know that that’s normal.

If you requested a fluoride application for some extra cavity protection, you’ll receive it during your cleaning.

The Experience

Many patients are nervous or outright afraid of the dentist, so dental teams make it a point to provide compassionate care and positive experiences. Modern technology like intraoral cameras and digital X-rays make checkups and cleanings more comfortable than ever before, and if you’re anxious, you’ll be reassured to know that your dentist likely has more than one dental sedation option available.

Even if it has been a long time since you’ve been to the dentist, you can expect quality, judgement-free care. Your team will be wholly focused on your smile, so try to relax and trust them to handle the rest!
